Commitment

Barbara and I have been doing what I call clean eating.  It is not really what most people would consider clean eating but I refuse to call it a diet because it is more an eating discipline than a conventional diet.  When we decided to change our eating habits, I said that we were committing to lifestyle from which we could not go back.  The trouble with those who start then stop diets is that they are worse off after they stop than they were before they started.  Therefore, once we found something that worked for us, we were committed.  In fact, I’ve lost over 15 pounds and a few inches.  I have had to use an old belt I almost threw away because I never thought I would have need of it and I can wear jeans that were too tight eight months ago.

This Saturday was a busy day.  It started with a Men’s Ministry breakfast at the church then I rushed across town to an all-day screenwriting seminar.  Finally, I headed home and immediately started working to finish the revisions of three Zero Hero episode synopses that had to be submitted.  In the process of the day, I ate biscuits and gravy with sausage for breakfast (yum), had a donut before the seminar (it was a Krispy Kreme how could I not eat it?) and Wendy’s for lunch with a small Frosty.  Back home, Barbara brought home a Taco Bell since neither of us wanted to stop and fix something for dinner.  Yep, call it a day of not-so-clean eating.

The problem was that we have trained our bodies to expect and process a certain type of food and, while we eat junk food on occasion, fast food is now a rarity for us.  Therefore, our bodies definitely had a most unpleasant response to the entire day of different eating.

The moral of the story is to beware of what you commit to in life.  Commitment is good.  It is essential to life.  We all know or have known people who refuse to dedicate their lives to anything.  A non-committed person will drift though life and probably never find satisfaction with any part of it.  Commitment is just that, a dedication to something or someone but once that commitment is broken, there is a price to pay.

Meanwhile, Sunday was back to the eating regiment.  I anticipate my body thanking me.
